Artists Profile
Adjahdura Artist: Chris (Baitja – Snake) Angrave

As well as a painter, Chris is a talented poet, musician and dancer. He enjoys spear fishing, camping and surfing. Chris started playing the didgeridoo when he was 5 years old. He also works for his uncle as a Cultural Tour Guide. Like all the Adjahdura artists, his paintings reflect his country, life, culture and Dreaming stories.

Chris says “I paint because it gets me away from the real world - it relaxes me”.

When Chris was 3 years old, his mother passed away and his father’s white family fought a custody battle with his mother’s black family - his mother’s family won. Chris says, “My father wasn’t really there for me when I was growing up - but our relationship is good now”.

After the custody battle, he lived with his grandparents and other members of his family. As a child his family moved around a lot because his grandfather worked on the railways.

Chris has an Aboriginal Ranger Certificate, and has completed Land Management courses, certificate in Tourism Operations, and other licenses and certificates. He completed 2 years of a Bachelor in Applied Science (Conservation and Park Management), but he started getting into trouble, so he deferred and moved back to the Aboriginal community of Point Pearce.

Chris has a fascination for snakes and lizards. He’s always handling them and has a deadly brown snake in a jar beside his bed. Chris says, “As a young boy I hardly every was at school - I was always down the paddocks looking for snakes under tins - once I caught a 6 foot brown snake and took it to school -  it freaked everyone out - I used to get snakes and chase people around with them -  and I used to put snakes in my bath tub.
