ADJAHDURA ABORIGINAL
COASTAL
ARTS
The young
Aboriginal
artists featured on this site are direct descendants of the traditional
owners of Adjahdura Land - they express in their paintings the
connection they have with their country and sea.
Dreaming
stories and cultural
knowledge have been handed down, from generation to generation, for
thousands of years. Their life experiences, spiritual connection to
country and culture can be seen in their work - the sea in particular
is a major influence because three quarters of their country is
bordered by sea and their Aboriginal community (Point Pearce) is
located by the sea.
Growing
up hunting and gathering from the sea - listening to
elders Dreaming stories - understanding the meaning of these stories
and cultural landscapes - form strong influences in their work.
They have
had difficult lives - they live in poverty - and most have been in
trouble with the law. It’s a tough life growing up in an Aboriginal
community that has trouble with violence, drugs and alcohol addiction.
But Point Pearce and Adjahdura Land (Yorke Peninsula, South Australia)
is their home and sanctuary and their connection to the spirit world.
No matter where they go, their country is part of them and they
are part of their country.
