Aboriginal
Community of Adjahdura Land
On this country there are: * Traditional Owners with cultural knowledge * Traditional Owners with very little cultural knowledge and * Non-Traditional Owners (broader Aboriginal community). Traditional Owners Group Formed The
Adjahdura Traditional Owners with cultural knowledge have banded together
to form the
Adjahdura Land Traditional Owners Group (ALTOG). The group was formed
to ensure that the Traditional Owners with cultural knowledge of
Adjahdura Land have a voice and an active role in shaping the future of
their country and people.
This group has been structured like a traditional group should be - not like a white fella corporation. Elders of the group are highly respected Adjahdura elders; Irene Agius - oldest Traditional Owner living on the Aboriginal community of Point Pearce; and Elaine Newchurch. The group will be very active in standing up for the rights of the Traditional Owners of Adjahdura Land and should be consulted on all issues dealing with Adjahdura Land (Yorke Peninsula, South Australia), culture and heritage. Narungga Nations Aboriginal Corporation (NNAC) With Narungga
Nations Aboriginal Corporation (NNAC) both Traditional and Non-
Traditional Owners got together to try and claim this country back, but
things have gone wrong - traditional owners with cultural knowledge are
not being respected and are not being listened to - they have been
treated badly. Without proper
consultation, uninformed
decisions are being made about Adjahdura culture and heritage matters
that decision makers know very little about - and government people are
taking their word for it because they are in positions of power.
The Narungga Indigenous Land Use Agreement negotiations are a good example of this. The agreement extinguishers all Native Title rights on the land in return for very little. Traditional owners have put up 18 objections to the agreement that relate to Adjahdura culture and heritage, but they have been pushed aside and ignored. See: Media First Official Statement - Traditional Owners Group does not recognize the Narungga ILUA In their first official statement as a group, the Adjahdura Land Traditional Owners Group states that it officially does not recognize the Narungga Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) - in a traditional way it was unlawful because of the way it was handled. The Narungga ILUA will not benefit the traditional owners - it will extinguish land rights - and culture and heritage will be lost. Traditional Owners have put up many objections to the ILUA but the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT) have gone ahead and registered the ILUA anyway, without any consultation between the parties. Joining the Adjahdura Land Traditional Owners Group Joining the group is open to all Traditional Owners of Adjahdura Land with cultural knowledge of their country.
